I stumbled across this little (approx. 2" long) mantis back in June, 2016. There were around five of them hanging out on a chrysanthemum, waiting patiently for a meal to fly by. Some were sitting on top of flowers, but this one was hiding in plain sight, camouflaged by the same colored stem it was hanging from. Mantids have compound eyes. The black spot on the eye is a 'pseudopupil', making it appear that the eye is following you. Pretty cool.
